This illustrated gift book of short comics illuminates author Debbie Tung’s experience as an introvert in an extrovert’s world. Presented in a loose narrative style that can be read front to back or dipped into at one’s leisure, the book spans three years of Debbie’s life, from the end of college to the present day. In these early years of adulthood, Debbie slowly but finally discovers there is a name for her lifelong need to be alone: she’s an introvert.
The first half of the book traces Debbie’s final year in college: socializing with peers, dating, falling in love (with an extrovert!), moving in, getting married, meeting new people, and simply trying to fit in. The second half looks at her life after graduation: finding a job, learning to live with her new husband, trying to understand social obligations when it comes to the in-laws, and navigating office life. Ultimately, Quiet Girl sends a positive, pro-introvert message: our heroine learns to embrace her introversion and finds ways to thrive in the world while fulfilling her need for quiet.
Opinión
Debbie es una chica callada y algo tímida a la que le encantan los libros. Leer es su gran pasión y a lo que más tiempo dedica cada día. No entiende como otros pueden encontrar aburrido el leer cuando para ella lo es todo, sus mejores momentos de diversión, relax y evasión han sido siempre a través de las historias que lee.
Es amable y atenta pero le cuesta mucho relacionarse con los demás e integrarse. Prefiere la tranquilidad de su casa, acompañada de un libro y una tasa de té a estar toda la noche de fiesta.
Quiet Girl in a Noisy World describe a grandes rasgos la vida de Debbie en la universidad, su obsesión por llegar pronto a los lugares para elegir el que ella considera el mejor sitio, o su gran timidez que le impide hablar en público. Pero también nos habla de cuando a su vida llega el amor o su experiencia en el primer trabajo tras terminar la carrera universitaria.
En un libro sencillo pero muy bonito con el que podrán identificarse muchas personas que al igual que Debbie, ven en la interacción social un gran obstáculo que les impide ser ellos mismos, ser felices tal cual son y sentirse aceptados.
Quiet Girl in a Noisy World anima a todas las personas a buscar su felicidad independientemente de como sean y demuestra que sentirse o ser diferentes al resto no es ni tiene por qué ser malo.
Creo que las novelas gráficas de Debbie Tung son todas muy bonitas y especiales. Espero que siga publicando más.
