In playful free verse, author Evie Robillard offers a unique introduction to one of the most influential figures of twentieth-century art and literature. It includes twelve child-friendly quotations from Stein’s work, such as: “It takes a lot of time to be a genius, you have to sit around so much doing nothing, really doing nothing.” Illustrator Rachel Katstaller’s fun yet detailed art delightfully evokes the time and place of the text. Touching on literature, history, writing and the visual arts, this biography offers loads of direct curriculum applications. Back matter includes a time line, “snapshots,” sources and an author’s note with further background.

Gertrude Stein y Alice B. Toklas fueron mujeres singulares que se adelantaron mucho a su época tanto por su estilo como por su forma de vida. Gertrude tenía una gran sensibilidad y un talento innato para reconocer el buen arte. Le gustaba escribir, coleccionar pinturas y estar rodeada de sus amigos. Era una mujer de personalidad arrolladora y llegó a ser alguien muy influyente.
Por el contrario, Alice era más discreta. Disfrutaba de la vida en un segundo plano y además se encargaba de organizar la vida de ambas. Se convirtieron en inseparables y juntas consiguieron reunir una gran y valiosísima colección de obras de arte de artistas como Cézanne, Picasso y Matisse, entre muchos más y que hoy se pueden visitar en muchos museos gracias a que no fueron destruidos durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Aunque A Portrait in Poems está pensado para un público infantil, es un libro que fácilmente puede gustar a todo tipo de público. La historia está contada en forma de poemas y a estos les acompañan unos bonitos, divertidos y con aire desenfadado que reflejan a la perfección el carácter un poco bohemio y alocado de las mujeres que representan. Están tan bien ejecutados que nada más comenzar a leer, nos transportan al lugar y época que reflejan.
A Portrait in Poems es un libro singular y de gran belleza que, con breves pinceladas, adentra a los niños en la vida tan fascinante de estas mujeres, pero, además, nos abre las puertas al mundo de la pintura, el arte y la poesía. Es un cuento con los detalles justos para que su lectura resulte atractiva y a la vez despierte la curiosidad de los más pequeños. Es una pequeña obra de arte en sí mismo.
